Indian Private Dining in London: Ideas for Birthdays and Celebrations

Birthdays, anniversaries, family gatherings and business dinners: practical ideas for planning an Indian celebration in London, and how to arrange it with our Fulham team.

For Indian private dining in London, the best approach is to start with the occasion and the guest list, then let the menu follow: sharing plates for a lively birthday, the tasting menu for a milestone anniversary, a relaxed set of classics for a family gathering. At Pure Indian Cooking in Fulham we can arrange private dining, celebrations and catering, and the quickest way to begin is a short enquiry through our private dining page.

At a glance

  • Private dining, celebrations and catering can be arranged: birthdays, anniversaries, business dinners and family celebrations.

  • Tasting menu by Chef Shilpa Dandekar: £68 per person.

  • 67 Fulham High Street, SW6 3JJ, a 4-minute walk from Putney Bridge station.

We have been cooking on Fulham High Street since 2015, and celebrations have always been part of the rhythm of the place. Here is how we would think about planning one, occasion by occasion.

What makes Indian food so good for a celebration?

Indian food is built for the table. Few cuisines are as naturally generous: a spread of curries, breads, rice and chutneys in the middle invites people to pass dishes, compare notes and try something they would never have ordered alone. That sense of sharing does a lot of the hosting for you.

It also handles mixed groups well. One table can hold a mild, creamy dish next to something properly fiery, plus vegetarian plates that stand on their own rather than filling a gap. When guests have different tastes, that range matters more than any single showpiece.

How should you plan an Indian private dining menu in London?

Start with three questions: how many people, what kind of mood, and what dietary needs are in the group. Share those when you enquire and we can suggest a format that suits. Broadly, there are three routes.

Sharing-style for a lively table

For birthdays and get-togethers, sharing is hard to beat. Starters such as Patra Chaat (£11), Crispy Buttermilk Chicken (£10) and the Sharing Board (£20), with basil chicken tikka, seekh kebab, tandoori paneer and vegetables, chilli fried squid and curried cashew nut, set a sociable tone. Follow with a spread of mains and plenty of naan and saffron pulao. Our guide to the à la carte menu walks through every section if you want to shortlist favourites.

The tasting menu for a milestone

For a significant anniversary or a birthday with a zero on the end, Chef Shilpa's tasting menu (£68 per person) turns dinner into an event. It runs from pani puri shots and lamb chops to a kokum granita, lamb sukke with asparagus poriyal, dal makhani and naan, then a gulab jamun chocolate brownie with coffee and petit fours. Our post on what to expect from an Indian tasting menu covers pacing and how to prepare. If you are thinking of it for a group, mention it in your enquiry and we will talk through whether it suits the occasion.

Classics for a family gathering

When grandparents and children are at the same table, familiar dishes keep everyone happy. Butter Chicken (£16), the mild Pistachio Chicken Curry (£16), Dal Makhani (£11), slow cooked overnight, and the biryanis (lamb £22, chicken £20, prawn £23) are reliable crowd-pleasers. Families and children are always welcome here.

Dinner for the table: sharing dishes do much of the hosting at a celebration.

Which occasions work best?

  • Birthdays. Lean into sharing plates and a round of cocktails. Something like the Chilli Mango Margarita (£12) or the Tropical Bellini (£14) gets things going.
  • Anniversaries. The tasting menu, a bottle of Champagne such as Taittinger Brut Réserve (£125) and a slower pace. Our post on a romantic dinner in Fulham has more ideas for couples.
  • Business dinners. A clear format helps conversation flow. Agree the menu in advance so the evening is about the guests, and choose wines that work across the table.
  • Family celebrations. Mix the classics with a few adventurous dishes and keep mocktails on hand for younger guests and drivers.

What should you drink at an Indian celebration?

A welcome drink sets the tone. Our cocktail list includes the Delicate Saffron Gimlet (£11) and the Smoking Jim Old Fashioned with clove smoke (£12), while mocktails such as Kokum Sharbat and Mumbai Madness (£7 each) mean nobody is left with just a soft drink.

For wine, aromatic and off-dry whites tend to sit comfortably with spice. The wine list includes Grover's Sauvignon Blanc from Karnataka, India (£41 a bottle), a fun talking point for the table, plus Estate Riesling from Dreissigacker (£55). For toasts, J.M. Gremillet Brut is £75 a bottle. Our Indian food and wine pairing guide goes deeper.

How do you plan for dietary needs in a group?

Ask guests early. A quick message asking about allergies and preferences saves awkward moments on the night. Then pass the information on when you enquire, and remind our team when you arrive.

Indian cooking is naturally rich in vegetarian dishes, so there is plenty of choice. Baingan Bharta, Bhindi Anardana, Lasooni Palak and Dal Tadka (£11 each) are as satisfying as any meat main. We offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and allergens are marked on every menu. Always tell us about allergies so the kitchen can advise.

Can we cater a celebration somewhere else?

Yes, catering can be arranged as well as dining in. Tell us about the event, the number of guests and the kind of food you have in mind through the private dining and catering page, and we will come back with options. For a smaller gathering at home, you can also order online for collection or delivery.

Who will be cooking?

Our Executive Chef, Shilpa Dandekar, began her career with the Taj Group in India, cooked at Quilon in London and became head chef of Brasserie Blanc at Bank. She runs the restaurant with her husband, Faheem Vanoo, who looks after the business and front of house. You can read their story on our about page. Critics have noticed too: Harden's sums us up as "West End flavours at suburban prices".

The earlier you get in touch, the more options there are, particularly for weekends.
